Carol Schram: Could Daniel and Henrik Sedin be in play at the trade deadline? The future of the Sedins will be one of many questions that Jim Benning will need to address as the Vancouver Canucks get back to work after their bye week and the trade deadline approaches.

Canucks are retaining on Luongo and Hansen so the max they can retain is 50% on one Sedin.

10.5M cap hit if moved together

That would be a tough trade to make.

Wondering if they get cap relief on the retained salary if player (Luongo) is on LTIR?

Retaining salary on the Hansen deal was dumb, it is only 2.5m

TY Carol,

If the twins want to play another year and VAN doesn't want to re-up them, why not accept a trade to a contender and another deal for next season, ala Burrows?

Benning got a lot of love for the TDL last year, but the Hansen trade is looking pretty meh so far. Would have been better off trading him at full cap hit for a draft pick

Burrows trade helps ease the pain though.

JP would have to broker the deal, not sure the management group has the skill to pull off a trade like that.

Retain 50% on 1 Sedin and take back the worst possible contracts that team they are getting traded to has

Rangers: - Rick Nash?

Stars: Lehtonen?

Capitals: - Orpik?

Find a 3rd team, take back their bad contract, Have them retain the other 50% of a trade so they both go tot the same team?

What team(s) in the league have that kind of cap space to work with?

Do not see the Sedins being moved at all. I think Carol said it best:

The main issue is probably getting a sense of whether or not they'd like to return next season and, if so, what kind of money they might be after. Those details should inform Vancouver's trade-deadline strategies...

They need to plan out next year and big part of that will be if they have those two forwards or not and how much it is going to cost.

I feel like either another GM would have to initiate all of this or someone else in the Canucks front office other than Linden/Benning would have to propose this to them as an idea.

It’s a long shot and pretty unrealistic, but I honestly don’t think these guys are creative enough with the CBA/Cap to even think about doing stuff like this.

It took them until just this past year or so to start calling up AHL players to maximize LTIR savings. When Benning fired Gilman they had to call the NHL front office for help with cap rules lol
